What is Army ROTC?

The Reserve Officers Training Corps at Oklahoma State University provides an educational training program that develops leaders and future U.S. Army Officers as they complete their degrees. Army ROTC is the primary source of commissioning for officers in the reserve components (National Guard and Army Reserve), and for 65% of the active army. It is a program that, in cooperation with universities, trains and commissions the future leadership of the U.S. Army.

How does Army ROTC work?
During the first two years of ROTC classes students incur no military commitment. Students enroll in Military Science classes the same way they enroll in their other classes. The freshman classes are MLSC 1112/1212 and the sophomore classes are
MLSC 2233/2313. The four year program is divided into two course levels. The first is the Basic Course open to any student at any college level with no military obligation. The second is the Advanced Course.

  • The Basic course occurs the freshman and sophomore years. During this course of study the students are introduced to the military environment and basic planning and leadership skills. Classes consist of the history of the Army, basic leadership, traditions and courtesies of the Army, land navigation, rappelling, and physical conditioning. Emphasis is placed on acclimating the student to college life and organizational skills for success in their academic coursework.
  • The Advanced Course occurs the junior, senior, or graduate years of college. The student’s training focuses on developing the leadership skills of a Second Lieutenant. Subjects taught include leadership, management, communication, counseling, confidence building, and problem solving. The major training event of the course is the Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) held at Ft. Lewis, Washington. It is a five-week training event that evaluates each cadet on his/her leadership skills. Cadets are trained and evaluated on small unit leadership, military tactics, rifle marksmanship, land navigation, and physical fitness. Cadets are introduced to the various branches of the Army (occupations from medical to infantry). They view demonstrations of the capabilities of the Army from Artillery barrages to Infantry operations and tank gunnery. All transportation and training are at the expense of the Army while the cadet earns a paycheck for participating.

What happens at the end of the course?

  • Guaranteed part-time or full-time employment.
  • A resume that reflects training in a world class nationally recognized leadership program.

In addition, many cadets enjoy long, fruitful careers in the military, gaining rank, experience, and responsibility every year. An active duty Army career offers you the opportunity to travel around the world; learning and experiencing more than the average college graduate.

For those who enjoy living in one place, the National Guard or Army Reserve offers the same rank, experience, and responsibilities, but in your local community. These officers work to build and enhance their hometowns while pursuing a career in their chosen profession.
